Sydor Top Canadian at World Cup Opener

May 25, 2004

PacificSport's Alison Sydor had the top Canadian finish at the World Cup of Mountain Biking opener this past weekend in Madrid, Spain.

Sydor (Vancouver/Victoria) rode to a solid fourth place after winner Gunn Rita Dahle (NOR). Other PacificSport mountain bike program finishes were Kiara Bisaro (Courtenay, BC) 16th, Chrissy Redden (Campbellville, ON) 26th, Trish Sinclair (Victoria) 28 and Melanie McQuaid (Victoria) 56th.

In the men's race, Belgium's Filip Meirhaeghe took the victory, while top Canadian was Ryder Hesjedal (Victoria) in 24th place. The huge men's field (187 starters) played havoc with the riders on the first lap, as those further back tried to work their way forward before the race entered the first steep climb at the three-kilometre mark. Roland Green (Victoria) was a victim of this jockeying for position, when another rider charged by him and promptly crashed. Green managed to avoid going down, but another rider ran into the back of him, breaking off the cable on Green's rear derailleur, ending his race after less than 10 minutes of racing.

Hesjedal explained his atypical placing: "I have been racing on the road (with US Postal), so this is the first mountain bike race I have done since March. I knew coming in that this would be a hard training ride, since I don't have that mountain biking 'top end' yet. But it will come, I'm confident."

Other PacificSport finishes: Seamus McGrath (Milton, ON), 35; Ricky Federau (Vancouver) 81, Geoff Kabush (Courtenay, BC) 121.

The PacificSport National Cycling Centre is one of six national centres (athletics, cycling, rowing, rugby, swimming, triathlon) at the PacificSport Canadian Sport Centre Victoria. The centre is one of eight Canadian Sport Centres, including Atlantic, Calgary, Montréal, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Vancouver.
