Success at Mt. Hood for PCC Cyclists

June 08, 2009

Rob Britton and Jamie Sparling recorded some impressive results at the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic from June 3-7. The event was divided into five stages — a rolling 3.1 mile prologue, a hilly 85 mile circuit, an 18.5 time trial, a 92 mile road race, and a hilly criterium.

After racing in Washington and Oregon, both Britton and Sparling were prepared for the challenging course — and they didn’t disappoint. Stage one for Britton was bitter sweet with him being amongst three other riders all battling for the podium. He was in third just before the finish line but was passed and finished fourth.

The time trial was the next day and both felt disappointed at placing 8th (Sparling) and 13th (Britton). However the best was yet to come for both riders. Stage 3 was the long, hilly road race and Britton and his team mates were at the front for most of the day. As Britton recalls: “I was exactly where I needed to be when the bullets started to fly!” With two kilometers to go Britton was neck and neck with Paul Mach and Chris Baldwin. “I started to think about not screwing up the finish and doing something stupid. I kept my cool and as Chris started to wind it up with about 500 metres to go I waited then at 200 metres I jumped with everything I had and came around. At the line I had a one second gap to the two of them and I had done what I’ve wanted to do for the past three years. Win a big bike race!”

It was Sparling’s turn at Stage 4 at the criterium with an impressive win on a very hilly course. The final GC standings showed Britton finishing fifth and Sparling eight.
