The BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester’s Sport City marked the first Paralympic track cycling event of 2009. Participation in the world cup was by invitation only based on those competitors with strong performances from the 2008 season. Based on their 3 top 8 finishes in the Beijing Paralympics, Brian Cowie and his pilot Devon Smibert were invited to attend.

The competition included athletes from Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, and the United States to name a few. The Brits dominated the sprinting events, as usual, and featured a couple of new athletes to the Paralympic program. There were also a couple of record attempts that were made during the event which meant that there was a lot of media coverage, including several cameras from the BBC.

The Canadian tandem team of Cowie and Smibert brought home a gold medal in the pursuit with a fast early season time of 4:34.805, edging out the new Dutch team by a couple of seconds. The Dutch led most of the race with a much faster start than Cowie and Smibert, but the Canucks slowly chipped away at their lead with very consistent lap times throughout. This made for a very exciting race as the two teams were neck and neck for over half of the race. It became apparent that Cowie had a firm grasp on the win as he actually sped up in the last few laps as the Dutch continued to fade.

Many of the same participants moved on to a second world cup that was held in Newport, Wales just a couple days later. Cowie and Smibert brought home a second gold medal in the pursuit at this event after a long day of delays and schedule changes. The team managed to ride a very similar time, which bodes well for competition at the world championships to be held in Manchester in early November of this year.
