Brian Cowie and Devon Smibert will represent Canada at the Piacenza - Cortemaggiore International Para-cycling Cup on July 25-26, 2009. The two Paralympians, trained by PCC Head Coach Houshang Amiri, will have the opportunity to accumulate UCI points to qualify for the Road World Paralympic Championships in Piedmont, Italy from September 8th — 13th, and for the Paralympic Games in London in 2010.

This is the 1st International Paralympic Cycling Cup that is being staged to provide a World Cup ranking for the categories: LC, HC, CP, and Tandem. “The race in Piacenza will be a short, fast race - almost like a criterium - where we will have the chance to secure our place on the Road World Championship team,” said Smibert, who guides for Cowie. “With three Canadian Tandems in the race, we should be guaranteed to see the Maple Leaf on the podium.”

The International Paralympic Cycling Cup takes place over two days with the road race in Piacenza, and the individual stopwatch race in Cortemaggiore.
