Pacific Cycling Centre Head Coach Houshang Amiri, ChPC, recently taught a UCI cycling course in Vietnam as part of the IOC Olympic Solidarity Cycling Coaching Course for Coaches. The course took place from July 20 -30, 2009.

Amiri was appointed by UCI (Union Cycling International) to conduct and teach the Level 2 technical coaching course which was focused on road cycling and mountain bike components. Twenty-nine full- time coaches attended the course which was held in the An Giang Sport and Tourism Department, in Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province, Vietnam.

The course — which was conducted in English with a translator present — followed UCI guidelines. “There were practical sessions during the course and participants took part in a provincial road race on July 29th,” said Amiri. “During the course, group workshops were performed by participants, and they presented their group ideas to the rest of the class for feedback and open discussion.”

Highlights of the course included the official opening and closing ceremony. The opening ceremony was followed by dinner with the Vietnam Cycling Federation Vice President and Olympic Committee staff; and the closing ceremony was followed by a lunch with all course participants and the Vietnam Cycling Federation Vice President and Olympic Committee members.

Amiri noted that coaches in Vietnam are fully funded by their government, and they are keen to learn to become better coaches. “I believe UCI and the IOC has done great work for providing this kind of support to the coaches around the world, and I was delighted to have the opportunity to deliver the course.”

Houshang Amiri has over 37 years experience in cycling. He was formerly the Head Coach of the National Cycling Centre in Victoria, BC, and the National Coach for the Canadian Cycling Association.
