Hesjedal makes Canadian History

Victoria’s Ryder Hesjedal made history last weekend by winning a stage in the Vuelta a Espaņa (Tour of Spain). He completed the 174 km stage 12 in 5:34:31.

Riding for Garmin-Slipstream, this is by far the most prestigious win in his pro-cycling career. This comes after placing fifth in the San Sebastian Classic, a 237-kilometre one day road race. A grueling climb on the last part of the course was the make or break moment for Hesjedal. In second place, he passed the Spaniard Garcia and sprinted to the finish line.
A two-time competitor in the Tour de France, Hesjedal will be a strong contender in the 2009 UCI Road World Championship road race which takes place in Mendrisio, Switzerland, from September 23 — 27.
