Victoria’s Max Plaxton took a silver medal in the mountain bike race at the Pan-American Games last week. The 2011 MTB Canadian Champion had a strong race on the 24.8 km course, which took place in Tapalpa. Mexico.

The challenging course included riding on a cobblestone road, followed by a challenging climb at high altitude with an equally difficult descent. Plaxton, who trained in Colorado prior to the Games, to prepare himself for the race, has had a good year. In addition to being the Canadian Champion, his is also the 2011 USA ProXCT Champion.

Plaxton’s performance follows a tradition of mountain biking in Victoria and at the Pacific Cycling Centre, under Head Coach Houshang Amiri. Two-time UCI MTB Champion (2001 and 2002) Roland Green trained at the Centre, as did Ryder Hesjedal who started his career in mountain biking before his successful career on the road race circuit. He was a silver medalist in the 2001 U23 World Championships. Plaxton also medaled at the 2006 U23 World Championships taking bronze, and he is an integral part of the elite MTB training group in Victoria.

Amiri helped prepare Plaxton prior to his success at the MTB Nationals and the Pan-Ams. “Max has a lot more potential in mountain biking,” says Amiri.
