The FastTrack cycling youth program is underway at the Westshore Parks and Recreation Velodrome, in Colwood, BC. For the second year, this successful program will enable youths, ages 12 – 18 to learn to ride, race and hone their cycling skills under supervised coaching.

The 20-week program, based on Cycling Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), teaches cyclists effective skills, tactics and techniques. Fixed gear bikes are used at the velodrome, and as a result of a partnership between the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association (GVVA) and the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence (PISE), 20 new track bikes were purchased to make it more accessible for young cyclists to experience track cycling.

Training sessions are held Monday and Thursday afternoons with the option to participate in weekly races. The program is led by 1992 Olympic track cycling champion Kurt Innes, a NCCP Level 5 Cycling Coach, and Lister Farrar, NCCP Level 2 Cycling Coach. Additional events are held during the week including High Performance Training with Houshang Amiri, Head Coach of the Pacific Cycling Centre. Learn to Ride and Open Track sessions are also featured. On April 18 there will be a racing event for everyone from beginner to elite. Racing starts at 6 pm.
