PCC riders arrived back in Victoria last week after a successful training camp in Palm Springs, CA with the U23 Giant Langley / Smart Savvy+ Cycling Team. The team did over 1300km of riding over eight days. Head Coach Houshang Amiri said: “The camp proved to be a great base-mile boost with a lot of climbing every day.”

Giant Langley / Smart Savvy+ Cycling Team then entered three riders from its nine-man squad to compete in the first weekend of racing this season in the Escape Velocity Devo spring series in Vancouver.

Saturday was the Hougen East RR. “This was a fun, race for our riders on a flat course. “The peloton stayed together for the pack sprint while the top two finishers went solo, ahead of the peloton,” said Amiri.

Sunday was the Aldergrove Short RR, which proved to be a very different story - a demanding course with a nasty climb and a strong cross-wind, making the race very hard. This was the first real test of early fitness, where Alex Amiri showed his strength to get an early break to finish in second place. PCC had three U19 riders in the B group, and James and Mark Grant finished 2nd and 3rd (1st and 2nd in U19).

“Everything looks very good at this point. I’ve had a very good off season of training and just finished my general preparation phase with my team in Palm Springs,” said Alex. “March and April is a specific perpetration phase, and I’m looking forward to a good pre-competition phase in April and May as the team and I will be doing all the big races in June and July.”
