It was a golden moment for Micaiah Besler at the Junior National Track Championships last weekend. Winning five medals including two gold was not only an historic event for Saskatchewan Cycling, but a personal triumph for Micaiah as she also came away with two national titles.

Coached by Pacific Cycling Centre’s Houshang Amiri, Micaiah won Gold in the Madison and Team Pursuit, Silver in the Points race and Bronze in the Team Sprint and Elimination Race.

“Nationals was an amazing weekend filled with many new experiences and a lot of learning. It was some of my best racing and I was thrilled to come away with five medals and two national champion jerseys,” Micaiah said. “One of my highlights from the weekend was the points race, it was just so much fun! I also really enjoying having the opportunity to race in the Madison with my team mate Maggie Coles-Lyster.”

Caleb Bender from Saskatchewan Cycling also competed. “Track Nationals was a great opportunity for me. I gained race experience that I could not have gained otherwise, and that will prepare me for seasons to come.”

Both acknowledged Amiri’s coaching. “I could not have done it without Houshang. His coaching and support have been a huge factor in my success this past weekend and in my training,” said Micaiah. “I hope to continue to grow and develop as a cyclist under his guidance and coaching.I really appreciate Saskatchewan Cycling Association’s support in helping me to get to Canadian Track Championships and for all of the training camps and opportunities they gave me in order to improve in the last year.”

“A huge thanks to Houshang for preparing and training me for the past year,” Caleb added.”I can't wait to continue our work in years to come, hopefully with a national champion jersey in the near future!”

“I have been working with Micaiah for just over a year,” said Coach Amiri. “She enrolled into the SCA HP program I was running with Sask Cycling in 2016.  Micaiah’s work ethic, physical and mental abilities was behind her many podium finishes in 2016. Her ability to perform on demand put her in the forefront with top Canadian junior women at 2017 Canadian Track Nationals Championship, and she thoroughly deserves the five medals she won.”
