Victoria’s Annie Ewart dominates Junior Championships

(Victoria, BC — July 7, 2011) Pacific Cycling Centre athlete Annie Ewart put in a gold medal performance over the Canada Day weekend at the Junior Nationals in Ontario, coming away with two gold’s and one silver medal.

The 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Junior/Master/Paracycling Road Championships took place from June 30 — July 3. Ewart won the Junior Women’s 16.7km ITT title in 24:08. The following day she placed second in the Criterium, although she was also in the running for a first place finish, being beaten at the line by Allison Beveridge.

On July 3 she took her second gold in the 68km road race. She was riding in the pelaton with three laps to go when she made a break with three other riders. She won it on the last lap in 2:02:09 ahead of Beveridge and Alizée Brien.

“All three races were exciting and some really good hard racing from all the girls, which makes the racing that more challenging,” said Ewart. “My main focus leading in to the races was the time trial, and so I was pleased that it went as I had hoped. It would have been nice to have that third gold medal, but I was really happy for Allison Beveridge to win gold in the crit. We are both really good friends, and she deserved the win as she rode a strong and hard race. All in all, I was really happy with how Nationals went for me and can't thank everyone enough who have helped me succeed.”

Ewart is coached by Houshang Amiri from Victoria’s Pacific Cycling Centre. “Annie is one of those athletes that knows what she wants and knows what works,” he says. “Despite her very young age she is doing everything according to the plan on the bike and off the bike.” Amiri worked hard with Ewart over the winter and spring to prepare her for this season. “Her performance at the Nationals is the result of commitment, dedication, work ethic, family support and confidence in herself.” Ewart will go on to represent Canada at the Junior World Championships in October.
