Maximal is the peak value that can be achieved by correlating cycling variables. SMAP refers to identifying the peak work rate or power that an athlete can sustain using primarily aerobic energy systems (Oxidative System). It is different from a VO2max test since it focuses on sustainable power, and maximal oxygen consumption is not measured. MAP or SMAP test is recommended for all cyclists using heart rate monitors and/or power metres to measure training intensity. Those tests use established cycling protocol using the latest testing equipment and technology available to us. It will determine your aerobic fitness on the bike and your lactate will be sampled at the end of each stage of the test.
Lactate is the by-product of glucose utilization by muscle cells and has significant impact on athletic performance. There are limits to how the body can clear lactate and use as a new source of energy (fuel) within muscle cells. It is important to determine the lower and higher threshold (LT1 and LT2) levels of the aerobic system based on your lactate profile. (Both MAP and SMAP tests will identify LT1 and LT2 power and heart rate levels and will be included in the test report). Results from the test could be utilized by your coach to identify and build your specific training zones power and HR based on your individual physiology.
(Note: developing training zones and energy utilization are not part of test report – but are available upon request).
