Master Coach Houshang Amiri

Houshang Amiri, Head Coach of the National Cycling Centre-Pacific, is to receive the prestigious 2008 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award. The award - administered by the Coaching Association of Canada - will be presented during the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Sportif 2008 on Friday November 7 in Calgary.

The awards recognize coaches whose athletes won medals at the 2008 Olympic Games, the 2008 Paralympic Games, the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, and at various world championships. Amiri, who has been coaching for over 25 years, has coached athletes from the Canadian Road and Mountain Bike teams to many podium finishes. In September he coached Svein Tuft to a silver medal in the Individual Time Trial at the World Cycling Championships. It was the first men's road medal since 1984.

Fifty coaches will receive awards at the Sport Leadership Awards Ceremony. "With a conference theme of 'Executing Excellence,' what better way to honour our coaches than with the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards," says Steven Keith, Director of Olympic and Community Partnerships, Petro-Canada. "This year has been very successful and we are proud to recognize Canada's coaches for their tremendous contribution to sport."
