Pacific Cycling Centre Head Coach Houshang Amiri was a guest coach at the Calgary Cycling Centre’s warm weather camp in Penticton last week. Thirty seven cyclists attended the camp, along with four coaches and 10 volunteers.

The seven-day camp featured some long, endurance rides, a time trial and hill climbs. The first day, after the riders were divided into four groups, they did a time trial and hill climbing near Naramata. As PCC cyclist Alex Amiri commented each day had a routine: “Wake up, go to breakfast at 7:30 am. Make lunch for the day, then go for a ride at 10 am.  Afterwards, dinner at 5:30 and then lights out by 10 pm.”

The rides varied in length with the toughest day being the fifth day. “Our ride was purely climbing. We rode out to Giants Head, a very steep (7-15% grade) and long (3km long) climb. Most of the guys including me rode up four times in the hour we were given,” Amiri said.

The next day was the longest. “We rode out 100km to Osoyoos. We stopped for lunch then rode up Anarchist. It was an 11km highway grade climb. We rode to the top and then back down and took a different route back. By the time we got to the hotel we had ridden 193km, but I was determined to hit 200km so I rode the extra 7km then came back.” Amiri’s efforts were not in vain – at the awards dinner that evening he won the "Long Haul Rider" award for the most kilometres accumulated.
